County Intermediate Hurling Championship 1st Round: Cappawhite 1:16 Roscrea 1:11

Cappawhite got their new Intermediate campaign off to a winning start in Holycross on Sunday last. In what can only be called in the old adage a game of 2 halves Cappa got off to a flier with Donagh Heffernan putting over a point in the 1st minute closely followed with a fine effort from Rian Doody. Roscrea got their 1st score from a pointed 65 but Cappa responded almost immediately with a point from a Rian Doody free after a foul on Donagh Heffernan. Roscrea got the score back level with 2 converted frees before Cappa took control of the game.

Thomas Costello put over a fine long range pointed free. Roscrea with a second point from a 65 before a brace from Kevin Stapleton from play put Cappa back in control. Ross Dunne was rewarded with his industrious display at mid-field with a fine point followed by a great point from play from Rian Doody. Our next score was a goal from a Rian Doody penalty which was rewarded after Donagh Heffernan, who was causing havoc for the Roscrea full back, was pulled down in the square. We finished the half with another 2 points from Rian and 1 from Donagh to leave the score at half time 1:11 to 0:04.

After the display in the 1st half Cappawhite seemed to rest on their laurels as the 2nd half started and Roscea had 3 points back in a short space of time to bring it back to seven points between the sides. Rian Doody pointed a free to settle Cappa in what had now become a very physical encounter. Roscrea added another brace of points before Rian Doody added another 3 points including 2 from frees. At this stage Roscrea got a goal to leave 6 points between the sides. With the game being played in such a physical manner it was no surprise when the referee showed two red cards in what can only be described as a very harsh decision when some of the previous incidents were far more cynical. Roscrea added 2 more frees to leave only 4 points between the sides in the last few minutes. Rian Doody pointed the last score of the game from a free to leave the score  at Cappawhite 1:16 Roscrea 1:11.

Cappawhite can learn a lot from this game in the manner in which they died off in the second half but in saying that there were many positives learnt. In what was a strong overall team Riann Doody at wing forward closely followed by Donnagh Heffernan and Eanna Buckley stood out on the night.

David Murphy opened the scoring  with a point from play, it was followed by a pointed free by Eoghan Ryan and a point from play by Rian Doody. Rockwell Rosegreen then got their first score and the half finished with a point from play by William Barry. Leaving the score at half time 0-4 to 0-1 in favour of Cappa Gaels. The score would have been much closer but from a tremendous save from Dara McCarthy denying Rockwell Rosegreen of a certain goal.

Rian Doody opened the scoring in the second half with a point from play. Rockwell Rosegreen then had a dominant patch and scored 1-1 to level the match. Cappa Gaels fought hard to get back into the game and two points by Rian Doody put them ahead again. Rockwell Rosegreen then scored their second goal to go one point ahead. With time running out gaels really dug deep and two pointed frees from Eoghan put them ahead by one point.

County Junior B Hurling League: Cappawhite 4-21 Clerihan 0-5
Our Junior B Team played Clerihan in Cappawhite on Friday evening 8 April. Conditions were wet and poor underfoot. Cappa started well with Niall Hayes setting up a lot of the scores. The inside forward line soon started to cause trouble for the opposition with scores coming from all three in the first 20 minutes. Mick Ryan (W) was on the end of a lot of ball and by half time had notched up 1-3.

Clerihan came more and more into it as the half went on calling for a goal line clearance from Captain George Kelly. Joe Ryan (P) chipped in with some good scores before the break.

Dean O’Dwyer and Darragh Barry were introduced in the second half and showed their skill from the start with Darragh slotting the ball into the net midway through the second half. This was complemented with a fine point from Joe Carmody.

Given the difficult conditions, Cappa had good displays from Davy Stapleton, Martin O’Connor and Dean O’Dwyer in defence. Timmy Cranley worked hard at midfield, while all six starting forwards scored, as well as the subs introduced.
